FMC 20th Annual Quiz Night - Saturday February 24th 2024

The annual Morston Quiz (our 20th!!) returned to the Village Hall on Saturday 24th February 2024, with last year's winner, The Morston Macaroons, fiercely defending their title from enthusiastic teams such as Missing the Point, The Morston Mavericks, The Barney Bay Ducks and more. However, they were all pipped at the post in the very last round by the Morston Pishmires (it's an ant, apparently!)

This year's event, overseen by quizmaster Pete with his evening of head-scratching questions, was as always played out in the very best of high spirits and good humour. Such was the quality of questions that all teams remained in with a chance throughout, with the lead changing hands up to and including the final round.

A fine hot supper with deserts was provided by Jill and her team, with extras on hand such as good quality wine by the bottle and the ever-popular raffle, with prizes galore!

Thanks must go to all our organisers, helpers, scorers, volunteers and participants for yet another memorable evening, with over £1,500.00 raised for our cause.

If you would like to organise or join a team for next year's quiz, (places are limited), please contact Pete Tibbetts.

2024 Annual Shovell Dinner

Saturday 19th October 2024 - The Shovell Dinner

Details of this year's event and the guest speaker T.B.C.

Sir Cloudesley Shovell

Cloudesley Shovell (1650 – 1707)

Admiral of the Fleet Sir Cloudesley Shovell (c. November 1650 – 22 or 23 October 1707) was an English naval officer. As a junior officer he saw action at the Battle of Solebay and then at the Battle of Texel during the Third Anglo-Dutch War. As a captain he fought at the Battle of Bantry Bay during the Williamite War in Ireland.

Born in Cockthorpe, the son of John Shovell, a Norfolk gentleman, and Anne Shovell (née Jenkinson), Shovell was born into a family "of property and distinction" which, although not poor, was by no means wealthy. He was baptised on 25 November 1650. The unusual first name of Cloudesley derives from the surname of his maternal grandmother Lucy Cloudisley, who was the daughter of Thomas Cloudisley.
